Kymco is one of the most established names in the UK mobility scooter market. The Taiwanese manufacturer has been building mobility products for over 20 years, and Kymco Healthcare UK is the leading supplier on the Motability Scheme, the government-backed programme that helps disabled people lease scooters and powered wheelchairs.

Whether you need a lightweight folding scooter for holidays or a powerful 8 mph machine for long-distance road use, Kymco has a model designed for that purpose. This guide covers the full range, with honest comparisons to help you choose.

Kymco's Range at a Glance

Kymco's current lineup spans four broad categories. Prices shown include VAT, though VAT is removed at checkout for eligible disabled customers.

CategoryMain UseSpeedStarting Price (inc. VAT)
Folding ScootersTravel, holidays, public transport4 mph (Class 2)£1,607
Boot / Travel ScootersShort local trips, car boot storage4 mph (Class 2)£1,757
Pavement ScootersComfortable daily use around town4 mph (Class 2)£2,465
Road Legal ScootersLong-distance travel, road use8 mph (Class 3)£2,879

The price gap between categories reflects the engineering involved. A folding scooter uses lightweight aluminium and lithium-ion batteries to keep the weight down. A road-legal scooter needs a more powerful motor, larger batteries, full lighting, and suspension systems rated for higher speeds.

Folding Scooters: The K-Lite Range

Kymco's folding scooters are built around one design — the K-Lite — available in several variants.

K-Lite F (Manual Folding)

The K-Lite F folds manually with a simple lever mechanism. When folded, it measures just 90 cm long, 50 cm tall, and 48 cm wide, making it one of the most compact scooters on the market.

  • Speed: 4 mph (Class 2)
  • Range: Up to 9.3 miles per charge
  • Weight: 22 kg
  • Max User Weight: 19 stone (120 kg)
  • Battery: Lightweight lithium-ion (1.64 kg)

K-Lite FE (Auto Folding)

The FE model folds and unfolds at the press of a button via a remote control. It shares the same frame and specifications as the F but adds motorised folding for users who find manual folding difficult.

  • Price: From £3,059 (inc. VAT)

K-Lite Comfort and Comfort ALI

The Comfort variants add a more padded seat and improved suspension for users who prioritise ride quality over minimal weight. The Comfort ALI model features an aluminium frame and starts from £2,399.

Who Should Choose the K-Lite?

The K-Lite is the right choice if you regularly travel by car, train, or plane. It fits in most car boots without a hoist, meets airline lithium-ion battery requirements, and passes through standard doorways with ease. Its 9.3-mile range is sufficient for sightseeing or a day out at the shops, but it is not designed for all-day use or rough terrain.

An optional second battery can be stored under the seat to extend the range to over 18 miles.

Boot and Travel Scooters: The Mini Comfort

The Mini Comfort sits between the folding K-Lite and the larger pavement scooters. It does not fold, but it dismantles into lightweight sections that can be loaded into a car boot without a hoist.

  • Speed: 4 mph (Class 2)
  • Range: Up to 16 miles
  • Total Weight: 54 kg (heaviest single piece: 19.5 kg)
  • Max User Weight: 20 stone (127 kg)
  • Tyres: Solid (puncture-proof)
  • Price: From £1,757 (inc. VAT)

Key Features

  • All-round suspension for a smoother ride than most travel scooters
  • Delta tiller handlebars, which are easier to grip for users with limited hand strength
  • Front and rear LED lights
  • Compact enough at 108 cm long and 52 cm wide to navigate shop aisles

If portability is your priority and you travel frequently, the K-Lite wins. If you need more range and a more comfortable ride for regular local use, the Mini Comfort is the better choice.

Pavement Scooters: The Komfy 4

The Komfy 4 is Kymco's mid-range pavement scooter, designed for users who spend most of their time on pavements and paths but want a more substantial, comfortable machine than a boot scooter.

  • Speed: 4 mph (Class 2)
  • Range: Up to 20 miles
  • Weight: 93 kg (with battery)
  • Max User Weight: 25 stone (160 kg)
  • Motor: 500 watt
  • Tyres: Low-profile pneumatic on alloy-style wheels
  • Price: From £2,465 (inc. VAT)

Key Features

  • Reclining captain-style seat with headrest and 360-degree swivel
  • Fully adjustable suspension
  • Delta tiller handlebars with soft-touch grips
  • Full LED lights and indicators
  • Front basket and USB charging port
  • Turning radius of 156 cm

The Komfy 4 is not designed to be dismantled for car transport. At 93 kg, it needs a vehicle hoist or a trailer-mounted carrier. This is a scooter for daily local use — visiting the shops, getting to appointments, and spending time outdoors — rather than for travel.

Kymco offers four 8 mph scooters, each serving a different need. All are Class 3 vehicles, meaning they must be registered with the DVLA (free of charge) and can legally use the road. For full details on licensing and registration, see our guide on whether you need a licence for a mobility scooter.

Komfy 8

The road-legal sibling of the Komfy 4. It shares the same frame, seating, and feature set but adds an 8 mph top speed and a slightly longer range.

  • Speed: 8 mph (Class 3)
  • Range: Up to 25 miles
  • Max User Weight: 25 stone (160 kg)
  • Weight: 93 kg
  • Turning Radius: 156 cm
  • Price: From £2,879 (inc. VAT)

Agility

A step up in performance and luxury. The Agility features bespoke alloy wheels, oil-dampened suspension, a waterproof LCD display, and a 12V power socket for charging devices.

  • Speed: 8 mph (Class 3)
  • Range: Up to 25 miles
  • Max User Weight: 26 stone (165 kg)
  • Weight: 107 kg
  • Wheel Size: 12-inch pneumatic
  • Ground Clearance: 5.4 inches
  • Max Slope: 12 degrees
  • Price: From £3,329 (inc. VAT)
  • Colours: Sapphire Blue, Glossy Bronze, Cherry Red, Metallic Mink, Glossy Black

The Agility is ideal for users who want a premium ride without stepping up to the larger Maxer.

Midi XLS and Maxi XLS

The Midi XLS (from £3,455) and Maxi XLS (from £3,609) sit between the Agility and the Maxer. They offer progressively larger frames, higher weight capacities, and longer ranges for users who need something more substantial.

Maxer

The Maxer is Kymco's flagship — the biggest and most powerful scooter in the range.

  • Speed: 8 mph (Class 3)
  • Range: Up to 35 miles (45 miles with optional 100 Ah battery upgrade)
  • Max User Weight: 31 stone (200 kg)
  • Weight: 138 kg (with batteries)
  • Motor: 950 watt
  • Wheel Size: 13.2-inch pneumatic
  • Ground Clearance: 6.5 inches
  • Battery: 80 Ah x 2
  • Price: From £4,029 (inc. VAT)

Key features include a waterproof LCD display, oil-dampened suspension, a reclining swivel seat with headrest, LED lighting throughout, and front and rear bumpers.

The Maxer is designed for users who cover long distances daily, need a high weight capacity, or regularly travel over uneven ground. Its 6.5-inch ground clearance and 13.2-inch wheels handle grass, gravel, and gentle off-road paths that would trouble smaller scooters.

VAT Relief

If you have a long-term illness or disability, you are entitled to buy a mobility scooter free of VAT under UK law. This removes 20% from the price, which is a significant saving — on a Maxer, for example, the VAT saving is over £670.

Qualifying conditions include arthritis, COPD, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and many others. Temporary injuries do not qualify, and being elderly alone is not sufficient. Kymco dealers will apply the VAT exemption at checkout once you confirm your eligibility.

The Motability Scheme

Kymco is the leading supplier of mobility scooters through the Motability Scheme. If you receive the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the higher rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, you may be eligible.

Through the scheme, you exchange part of your benefit to lease a scooter. The lease typically includes:

  • Insurance
  • Breakdown cover
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Repairs
  • Battery replacement

This removes the burden of a large upfront cost and ongoing maintenance expenses. Most Kymco models from the Komfy 4 upwards are available through the scheme. To learn about other funding options, see our guide on funding for mobility scooters.

Running Costs and Maintenance

Battery Care

Battery health is the single biggest factor in your scooter's long-term performance and your main ongoing cost.

  • Lead-acid batteries (used in most Kymco models) are heavier and cheaper to replace. Expect to pay £100–£200 for a pair. They last 12–18 months with proper care.
  • Lithium-ion batteries (used in the K-Lite) are lighter and longer-lasting but more expensive to replace.

Charge your battery after every use, even short trips. Never let it run completely flat. Store the scooter in a dry place and charge the battery at least once a month during periods of non-use.

Servicing

An annual service from a qualified technician is recommended. This typically covers brakes, tyres (or tyre pressure for pneumatic models), battery health, electrical connections, and steering. Budget around £50–£100 per service depending on your location and dealer.

For a full maintenance breakdown, see our Mobility Scooter Maintenance Checklist.

Insurance

Insurance is not legally required for a Class 2 (pavement) scooter but is strongly recommended. For a Class 3 (road-legal) scooter, third-party liability insurance is essential — if your scooter causes injury or damage on a public road, you are personally liable without it.

A specialist mobility scooter insurance policy typically covers:

  • Accidental damage
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Third-party liability (up to £1–5 million)
  • Breakdown and recovery (optional)

Expect to pay between £50 and £150 per year depending on the scooter's value and the level of cover. For more detail, see our Mobility Scooter Insurance Guide.

Choosing the Right Kymco Scooter

The right scooter depends on how you plan to use it. Ask yourself four questions:

  1. How will you transport it? If it needs to fit in a car boot, your options are the K-Lite or the Mini Comfort. Anything larger requires a hoist or stays at home.
  2. How far do you travel? If you rarely go beyond the local shops (under 10 miles), a K-Lite or Mini Comfort has enough range. For longer daily journeys, you need a Komfy, Agility, or Maxer.
  3. Do you need road access? If you want to use the road, you need a Class 3 scooter (Komfy 8, Agility, Midi XLS, Maxi XLS, or Maxer). Class 2 scooters are limited to pavements and pedestrian areas.
  4. What is your weight? Check the maximum user weight carefully. The K-Lite supports up to 19 stone, the Mini Comfort 20 stone, the Komfy models 25 stone, and the Maxer 31 stone.

Where to Buy

Kymco scooters are sold through a national network of authorised dealers. Buying from an authorised dealer ensures you receive the full manufacturer warranty, access to genuine replacement parts, and support from trained technicians.

Most dealers offer a home demonstration so you can try the scooter on your own streets and paths before committing. This is worth doing — a scooter that feels comfortable in a showroom may handle differently on the pavement outside your front door.

You can find your nearest dealer through the Kymco UK website.
